Tiger's Den- Week of November 28th

Dear Parents,

Here is an update of our week and some upcoming events to look forward to…

Math: We’ve been working our way into Multiplication and Division during our Math Studies. We’ve done this through some challenging math puzzles and daily practice problems. The students became Mathematical Designers by creating Math Quilts by answering each multiplication question to find out the colors to use for their design.

Reading: This week we started learning how to summarize a fiction text. We did this using the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then “hand” method, practicing with the book One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo. We also talked about why the order we say adjectives to describe a noun makes a big difference. For instance, we wouldn’t say there were furry, big, five bears, we’d say there were five, big, furry bears.

Writing: We have officially started our new unit on Opinion Writing!  We started off the unit by getting our opinionated brains working, asking each other questions about what we like to do and switching cards according to who had similar interests. Then we were ready to start our first piece with the topic ‘why I love ice cream.’ The students did a fantastic job coming up with many reasons and using examples to explain their thinking.

Theme: The students have earned a privilege this week by going above and beyond the classroom expectations. We also received quite a few compliments about the classroom behavior this week which also helped us fill our “gem jar.” So we were able to make “Edible Layers of the Earth.” We created each layer starting with the inner core, outer core, and mantle, and then represented the crust with clay and topsoil. You should ask your child about it!
